What is SAE 8620 ALLOY STEEL?
SAE 8620 Steel is a low Alloy nickel, chromium, molybdenum surface hardened steel, usually supplied in rolled state, SAE 8620 Alloy Steel has a maximum hardness of HB 255max. SAE 8620 Alloy Steel has high external strength and good internal strength, giving it high wear resistance. SAE 8620 Alloy Steel has higher core strength than class 8615 and 8617.
SAE 8620 Alloy Steel is flexible during the hardening process to improve shell/core performance. Pre-hardened and tempered (uncarburized) SAE 8620 Alloy Steel can be further surface hardened by nitrizing, but does not respond satisfactorily to flame or induction quenching due to its low carbon content.
SAE 8620 Alloy Steel is intended for applications requiring a combination of toughness and wear resistance. SAE 8620 Alloy Steel is usually supplied in round rods.

Carburized gears, pinion gears, shafts, differential rings, steering worms, engine crankshafts, spline shafts, chains, air drill parts, chuck claws, oil well drills and reamers, piston pins, pneumatic chucks, heavy duty bolts, fasteners and hand tools.
SAE 8620 Alloy steel bar HEAT TREATMENT
Annealing: For optimal machinability, for SAE 8620 ALLOY STEEL, the structure at the time of forging is usually sufficient. If this proves not to be the case, then equal annealing from 1650ºF(900ºC) to 1225ºF(660ºC) will improve machinability.
Normalizing :1675ºF(910ºC) and air-cooled. This is another way to improve the machinability of SAE 8620 ALLOY STEEL; Normalizing treatment can also be used before hardening treatment.
Hardening: The alloy will be austenized at around 1525ºF(830ºC) and quenched in oil or water depending on section size and complexity.
Tempering: Using temperatures based on past experience to reach the desired hardness after water or oil has been quenched.
Machinability :SAE 8620 ALLOY STEEL is easily machined by proper forging cooling or subsequent heat treatment.
